Meet Iola — one of our Music Magic students — and the mind behind “Production Class A.” πΆ (A little pun in the title… we approve.)
She composed this piece during our workshop on music production, where students dove into the world of recording, layering, and shaping their own sound. What started as a simple piano idea grew into something textured, confident, and completely her own.
Watching students like Iola move from learning about music to actually creating it — that’s the real magic.
Does it really matter if someone is watching or not? When a song snatches your soul... you sing!
There’s a certain stillness that happens when music meets the moment.
At our Farmer’s Market Jam a few weekends ago, Emma played “Comptine d’un autre été” from Amélie — and suddenly, the noise of the morning softened. Conversations slowed. People paused. For a few minutes, everything felt peaceful. That can be hard to find in today's world.
That’s the quiet magic we hope our students discover — that music isn’t just about performing, it’s about being present. About sharing something honest and simple and human.
These are the moments we live for. πΏπΆ
It’s always wild to me how people think music just… happens. Like you’re either born with it or you’re not. But the truth? Every “effortless” performance you’ve ever heard was built on hours of not sounding that good.
Practice isn’t a punishment — it’s a privilege. It’s where you earn the right to feel free on stage.
So yeah, laugh at the meme, but also — go get back to your practice.π€ͺ
Some of our favorite moments are when our students surprise even themselves. β¨
This song was composed by Luke — one of our Music Magic students — sharing an original composition he created during our workshop on music production. The goal was simple: learn the tools, explore the sounds, and see what happens when creativity meets courage.
That’s what we love most about teaching music this way. It’s not just about technique; it’s about helping students realize they can create — not just play.
We’re so proud of Luke for taking that leap and turning an idea into something real. β¨
Just over a year in and already jamming like this πΉπ₯keep an eye out @hiforrest you have a big fan in training

We are so very proud of our recent grads! Look at those smiling faces. We love to see them every week!
Our teachers have an amazing time jamming and making music together! Here is Gabi and Mark performing "It's Too Late" by Carole King.
Let's be honest - in 2020, teaching virtually was a challenge for all of us. Over the years, we've come to love our virtual lessons! Here's a virtual selfie of Gabi with Allie and Katelyn, some virtual students we enjoy seeing every week!
I would say that smile is an indicator of how the performance WAS going...
We are so proud of all of our students who performed at the last day of the 2025 Uptown Ankeny Farmer's Market season! To kick off our showcase, here are Keren and Iola playing "Lovely" by Billie Eilish.
Is Michael McDonald in the room with us??
If you don't know who he is, go find out right now!
Post Malone started from the bottom which was undoubtedly here.
Also this is giving Friday by Rebecca Black vibes... ππ
This toothbrush has what it takes - consistency, tone, and presence!
WHO THINKS OF THESE THINGS???
One of the biggest lessons I've learned in life is that it's better to do something late than never. It's OK to miss a day and jump back on the horse, do it and hate it, or start over again and again.
Leave behind the idea that you have to have a perfect streak to do it at all.
Just... start.
A drone in music is a note sustained over a long period of time. It is the base for minimalist harmonies which creates a meditative atmosphere!
Let go of perfectionism β¨ day 2 of playing bass
.
Growing up I was taught not to deviate from the page, and it truly hampered my creativity. It turned freedom into fear. it stopped my mind from relaxing and feeling the music internally to being in a heightened state whenever I played, paranoid of mistakes
.
Here Mark does a great job of having his students walk alongside him instead of in front of him. He demonstrates how to do the thing in the moment.
.
These days, I intentionally craft improv time into most lessons. It's not often we get to have childlike play in our lives anymore π€Έπ½βοΈ

Now if only we could get a rattlesnake to do the beat ππͺ
